In December 2012, Dr. Paul Farmer was appointed by the Secretary-General as his Special Adviser on Community Based Medicine and Lessons from Haiti. As Special Adviser to the Secretary-General Dr. Farmer is working closely with all key partners to help galvanize support for the elimination of cholera in Haiti. He is also providing guidance on how to improve health and well-being in resource poor settings based on his experience building models of community-based medicine. In addition, Dr. Farmer's office is using the data gathered from the Office of the Special Envoy for Haiti to advise on lessons learned and how those can be applied in Haiti and other settings. Key areas of work for 2013 – 2014 include: Community Based Medicine Provide guidance on improving health and well-being using community based models. Create and roll out a strategy for public and private financing of cholera elimination in close collaboration with the Haitian authorities, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Haiti, a.i., Nigel Fisher, and key partners such as PAHO, UNICEF, and others. Through the good offices of the Special Adviser, work with PAHO and others toward lowering the price of the oral cholera vaccine. Support the Government of Haiti and UNDP in their efforts to track donor contributions for the elimination of cholera.
