Biography

As principal of Vaughn Next Century Learning Center in Los Angeles, Calif., Dr. Chan has consistently pushed the limits of education for more than 45 years as an educator, school leader, policy maker and the founder of the first conversion charter school in the nation. Serving more than 3,000 low-income students (PK-12), Chan’s school was named the 1995 California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. Chan served as a member of the California State Board of Education (2005-2012), was an adjunct professor at U.C.L.A. and California State University for 25 years, and a commissioner of the Los Angeles City Commission for Youth, Families and Community Services. A recipient of the Milken Educator Award, McGraw Hill’s Distinguished Educator award, Gleitsman Community Activist Award, and Irvine Foundation Leadership Award, Chan has relentlessly shared her innovative ideas on education and social reform nationally and internationally. Arriving in the U.S. alone, aged 17, with just $100, Dr. Chan began her career as an elementary school teacher in 1968.
