HSPVA Friends began in 1979 as MusicFest—a private, non-profit support organization awarding scholarships to students at Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). In 1997, MusicFest became HSPVA Friends and expanded its mission in order to address a broad range of needs at the school, including classroom supplies, specialized equipment, arts publications, master classes and guest artist residencies, production support, and the school's participation in national art conferences and competitions. HSPVA Friends is governed by an eleven-member Board of Directors and is supported by an Advisory Board comprised of approximately 50 civic leaders representing Houston's major arts organizations, universities, and businesses. HSPVA Friends has received millions of dollars in generous support from foundations, corporations, and individuals for projects that encourage excellence in education and the arts.
