Biography

Veronica began her professional career working with foster care youth and adjudicated youth in Charlottesville, VA. She then was a teacher for four years at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, DC through the Teach For America program. While at Eastern, Veronica taught high school Spanish, sponsored several clubs, and was a member of several school committees.

Veronica Nolan led Urban Alliance as Executive Director and CEO from 2002 - 2014. Under Veronica's leadership, Urban Alliance assisted over 10,000 low-income youth towards lifelong self-sufficiency by providing paid internships, training, mentoring, and case management while ensuring those youth were prepared for and accepted into college. While at Urban Alliance Veronica:

Expanded Urban Alliance's proven programs into her hometown of Alexandria, at no cost to the school district or taxpayers, by securing funding from foundations and local corporations

Expanded the organization from serving 42 youth in one school to serving over 2,000 youth annually in over 30 schools across four regions (DC, Alexandria/Arlington, Baltimore, Chicago)

Developed a portfolio of partnerships ranging across sectors from World Bank to Fortune 100 companies to government agencies and high performing nonprofits

Increased annual budget from $400,000 in 2002 to $6.5 Million in 2014

Oversaw growth of staff from 4 employees to 45+ and managed expansion from a local grass-roots DC nonprofit to a multi-region serving organization

Diversified funding streams to include foundations, corporations, local government, federal government and fee-for-service

Veronica earned several recognitions for running a high performing nonprofit including: Washingtonian of the Year, the Meyer’s Exponent Award, Washington Business Journal’s “Real Women Who Mean Business” and a finalist of the Washington Post Nonprofit Excellence Award. She participated in the 2010 Class of Leadership Greater Washington and also served on several boards including: Valley Drive Cooperative Preschool, DC Alliance of Youth Advocates, and Capital Area Asset Builders.

Currently Veronica is an adjunct professor in the College of Arts and Sciences department at Trinity Washington University. Trinity Washington University is a liberal-arts institution rooted in a history of social justice. Veronica teaches Critical Reading Seminar, which is a remedial reading class that prepares first generation college students to become reading-ready and coaches them for their university experience.

As an ACPS parent for the last 7 years (and with 13 more years to go!), she has seen the potential firsthand and is personally invested in the school system’s success.

Veronica received her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, her Masters of Art in Teaching from Trinity University and her Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Georgetown University.
