The Gateway School of NY has been serving students with learning disabilities and their families since its founding in 1965. We have a strong sense of partnership between educators and parents because it was a parent and an educator who teamed up to begin the school. The parent, Claire Flom, disagreed with many professionals' assessments of her son's ability, so she sought out a visionary educator, Elizabeth Freidus, in order to begin a school for her child and others who struggled with aspects of learning. Together, Mrs. Flom and Mrs. Freidus laid a foundation of optimism and child centeredness that has been strong enough to carry their work, through each successive generation of parents and educators, into the Twenty-First Century. Originally housed at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, whose generous support in asking for minimal rent allowed the school to thrive in its early days, Gateway moved to the American Institue of Architects award winning Evelyn McKenzie Building at 236 Second Avenue in 2001. Prior to moving, the educational program, which had become renown for its success with children ages 5 to 10, was expanded through the innovative and highly successful Transition Program to serve early adolescents through the age of 12. In 2007, the Trustees of the School resolved to create The Gateway Middle School, which builds upon Gateway's rich traditions and many successes to serve students through 8th grade, and to purchase a site to house both schools. The Gateway Schools opened their doors at 211 West 61st Street in fall of 2008. Located in a vibrant Upper West Side neighborhood that is home to Lincoln Center as well as many other cultural and educational institutions, the Schools are part of a community rich in educational opportunities for students. Our newly renovated, "green" facility is equipped with state of the art technology and contains all of the instructional spaces needed to allow the Schools to meet the needs and tap the potential of our wonderful students. For over 45 years, a Gateway education has made a remarkable difference in the lives of children with learning disabilities and their families. The Gateway Schools are proud of this heritage and are honored to carry such a strong legacy forward!
