The Women and Public Policy Program of Harvard Kennedy School closes gender gaps in economic opportunity, political participation, health and education by creating knowledge, training leaders and informing public policy and organizational practices. Our research provides evidence-based insights on the role of gender in shaping economic, political and social opportunities available to individuals. We identify successful interventions and measure their impact on women, men, and society, then share recommendations on what policies, organizational practices and leadership techniques help close involuntary gaps.

Career History
Representative from the 78th Assembly District
2010 - Current

The California State Assembly is the lower house of the California State Legislature. It consists of 80 members, with each member representing at least 465,000 people. Due to the state's large population and relatively small legislature, the State Assembly has the largest population-per-representative ratio of any state lower house and second largest of any legislative lower house in the United States after the federal House of Representatives. As a result of Proposition 140 in 1990 and Proposition 28 in 2012, members elected to the legislature prior to 2012 are restricted by term limits to three two-year terms (six years), while those elected in or after 2012 are allowed to serve 12 years in the legislature in any combination of four-year state senate or two-year state assembly terms.Members of the assembly are generally referred to using the titles assemblyman (for men), assemblywoman (for women), or assemblymember (for all genders). The State Assembly convenes at the California State Capitol in Sacramento. In the current session, the Democrats control 54 seats, forming a supermajority of the chamber. Republicans control 25 seats.

The Friends of Balboa Park was born out of the same commitment to civic-minded philanthropy that motivated San Diego’s leaders in the early part of the last century. Founded in 1999 by a group of longtime park volunteers, our organization is dedicated to Balboa Park as a whole, initiating park-wide projects that transcend individual institutions and address human-scale needs. Our vision is measured in acres and decades, manifested in activities that honor Balboa Park’s celebrated past, enhance its current place in the life of San Diego, improve access and lay the groundwork for a secure future. Our greatest successes are not always the most conspicuous: quietly identifying and meeting a need, seamlessly integrating a new feature into a historic setting, partnering with other organizations and public agencies to raise the park’s profile and give its interests a voice in city government.

The University is governed by The Regents, which under Article IX, Section 9 of the California Constitution has "full powers of organization and governance" subject only to very specific areas of legislative control. The article states that "the university shall be entirely independent of all political and sectarian influence and kept free therefrom in the appointment of its Regents and in the administration of its affairs." Board Membership Article IX, Section 9 was drafted in 1878 after a decade of political conflict demonstrated the importance of sheltering the university from shifting political winds. The board consists of 26 members: 18 regents are appointed by the governor for 12-year terms One is a student appointed by the Regents to a one-year term Seven are ex officio members -- the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Speaker of the Assembly, Superintendent of Public Instruction, president and vice president of the Alumni Associations of UC and the UC president. In addition, two faculty members -- the chair and vice chair of the Academic Council -- sit on the board as non-voting members. Board Officers The Governor is officially the president of the Board of Regents; however, in practice the presiding officer of the Regents is the Chairman of the Board, elected from among its body for a one-year term, beginning July 1. The current Chairman is Regent Sherry Lansing. The Vice Chairman is Regent Bruce Varner. The Regents appoints Officers of The Regents: the General Counsel; the Chief Investment Officer; the Secretary and Chief of Staff; and the Chief Compliance and Audit Officer. Former Regents Here is a list of individuals who have served as Regents of the University of California: Former Regents Committees and Meetings The Regents operates through 10 standing committees: Compliance and Audit, Compensation, Educational Policy, Finance, Governance, Grounds and Buildings, Health Services, Investments, Long Range Planning, and Oversight of the Department of Energy Laboratories.
