Biography

Thornton May began his career as an anthropologist studying tribal behavior in modern Japanese corporations. He was fascinated with the Japanese ability to observe, orient, decide and act (for instance, move data) faster than competitors. He returned to the U.S., getting a Master of Science with a concentration in cognitive science from Carnegie Mellon University. May apprenticed with über-futurist Alvin Toffler, whose firm assisted in creating the national digital strategies for Singapore, Korea and Mexico. In each national plan, high-speed data analysis and mobility figured prominently.

May specializes in creating action-based learning spaces for high-performance organizations. He ran the multiclient research program at the Nolan Norton Institute, led the management lab at Cambridge Technology Partners, co-founded the Olin Innovation Lab, founded the CIO Institutes at UCLA and UC-Berkeley, co-manages the CIO Solutions Gallery at Ohio State University, co-directs the CIO Practicum program at the University of Kentucky and is the executive director and dean of Florida State College’s IT Leadership Academy.

May’s most recent book, “The New Know: Innovation Powered by Analytics,” analyzes what organizations know, how they come to know and act upon what they know/don’t know. His writings, reviewed as having “Jeffersonian acoustic power,” have appeared in The Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Computerworld, India Today and the South China Morning Post.

A columnist for Computerworld, May advised the founding editors of Fast Company magazine. May obtained his bachelor's degree in Asian studies from Dartmouth College, his master's in industrial administration from Carnegie Mellon and developed his Japanese language competence at the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of Michigan and Keio University in Japan.
