Biography

Thomas A. Doyle — past chair of Baker & McKenzie’s North America Litigation Practice — has litigated and arbitrated complex commercial disputes for over 30 years. He has appeared in eight circuits of the US Court of Appeals, has tried complex cases to jury verdicts in state and federal courts, and has been retained by clients to specially appear in over 35 states. He was named a Leading Lawyer for his class action work, has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for his international arbitration work, and was named US-China Litigation Lawyer of the Year in 2014.

Practice Focus

Mr. Doyle’s practice primarily involves international disputes, often on behalf of non-US companies, and frequently involving coordinated proceedings in multiple venues. His class action experience includes securities, antitrust, RICO and consumer fraud claims. Mr. Doyle is often involved in internal investigations of international antitrust and corruption matters. Mr. Doyle has served on the Compliance & Investigations Practice Steering Committee and now serves as the Chair of the Firm’s North America China Initiative, and frequently represents Chinese clients in US proceedings.

Representative Legal Matters

* Arbitrated matters under ICC, AAA, UNCITRAL and Stockholm Chamber rules, involving construction, post-acquisition indemnity claims, joint venture break-ups, and pricing disputes.
* Resolved disputes involving long-term joint ventures and other contracts in a variety of unusual settings, including uranium mining, offshore oil production, LNG development, international auto distribution, jet engine development, Russian telecommunications infrastructure, construction contracting and outdoor advertising.
* Defended antitrust claims involving monopolization, tying, predation, and price fixing in diverse industries such as electrodes, microchips and Euribor interest rates.
* Conducted internal investigations for boards, audit committees, and legal departments related to bribery, bid-rigging, price-fixing, executive self-dealing and employee bullying.
* Resolved litigation arising from the fraud-induced collapses of banks, insurers, Enron, Health South, and Parmalat.
* Defended securities actions including class claims about managed earnings, inadequate internal controls, improper revenue recognition, false asset verification, aider and abettor liability, and EB-5 visa program fraud.
