Biography

Cason has been called a catalyst for systemic change. She first focused on women’s rights when she was denied equal opportunity in the world of investment real estate, a field she excelled in for over 20 years. In order to advance empowerment and education of girls globally, she aligned herself with organizations to leverage effectively her work and to make a difference. For example, as the Chair/CEO of the Cason Family Foundation (CFF), she spearheaded efforts to develop literacy and to fund education for girls in Upper Egypt, underwrote health programs in Liberia and worked to improve youth employment throughout the Middle East. For these projects, she joined forces with Save the Children, with Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Harvard, and with Queen Rania of Jordan.

A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Cason was a pioneer woman in commercial real estate, development and syndication. She was an early advocate for women’s financial empowerment, and created and implemented at her alma mater, University of California, Berkeley, a program called “Women and Money: The Changing Consciousness of Money Management,” which in the 1970s, became the first program of its kind. She co-founded the San Francisco chapter of the International Women’s Forum and is a member of the New York Forum and the Trusteeship in Los Angeles. Cason was honored in 2009 by Women’s eNews as one of “21 Leaders for the 21st Century” and honored by Women Who Care in 2012.

Cason was appointed and served as Chair for the Women’s Leadership Board at Harvard Kennedy School from 2003 through 2009, and remains as Chair Emeritus and serves on the Executive Committee. During her tenure, and to this day, the Board sponsors key research on women and girls. During her tenure the Board established collaborative programs with the Women and Public Policy Program to build the bench for women in leadership in developing countries and to train young women leaders. The Harvard Kennedy School acknowledged her leadership by naming a conference room in her honor.

Due to her work with waste pickers and her commitment with the Clinton Global Initiative, she developed an interest and greater understanding of issues around waste and sustainability. CFF developed an open knowledge hub at: www.informalwastesector.net.

The CFF worked in collaboration with the World Bank to create a taxonomy of waste so that benchmarking and determination of types of waste and sustainable issues could be better addressed. The taxonomy is available free on the World Bank website. In order to further impact a more sustainable approach to waste, Cason founded Sustainable WasteResources International (SWRI). SWRI’s mission is to create greater awareness of the value of waste as a resource.

Cason is currently in collaboration with Jawahar Kanjilal, the former founder of Nokia Life and former Vice President of Nokia. Together, they have created The Mobile Access Network for Global Opportunities (MANGO), to provide the use of mobile technology to accomplish a shared global mission of poverty reduction, global education, women’s education and economic empowerment, with a commitment to “scale up” this work to achieve global impact for the next billion. The Mobile Access Network for Global Opportunities (MANGO) will launch in India, in 2015.

She has authored articles on Women and Empowerment and coauthored a book on entrepreneurship in 2009: A Cup of Cappuccino.
