Biography

Robert J. Benvenuti III is a founding member of the Lexington law firm of Barnett Benvenuti & Butler, PLLC. Robert got his first job at 12 years old working nights and weekends at a small animal hospital. In high school and throughout college he worked construction and numerous other part-time jobs to pay for his college education. Robert has been actively involved in the health care industry since 1983. In high school and when home from college, Robert served five years as a member of a volunteer rescue squad.

Robert has earned three degrees from the University of Kentucky. He received his Bachelors degree in 1988, a Master’s of Public Administration from the UK Martin School of Public Policy and Administration in 1991 and in 1998 graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law. Before becoming an attorney, Robert served in various administrative and management positions for Baptist Healthcare Systems of Kentucky. While in law school he was a member of the National Moot Court Team and a published author. After graduating from law school in 1998, Robert served as the originating Corporate Compliance Officer for the UK Chandler Medical Center. Robert also practiced law at the law firm of Stites & Harbison, PLLC.

In February 2004, Robert was appointed Inspector General for the Cabinet for Health and Family Services where he served until January of 2007. As Inspector General Robert led a staff of approximately 340 employees and was responsible for conducting surveys and investigations involving more than 3,000 health care facilities and services across the Commonwealth. Robert’s office was also responsible for conducting internal investigations into wrongdoing by Cabinet employees and contractors; investigating allegations of fraud, waste, and abuse; and investigations of controlled substance abuse and trafficking.

Robert has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Kentucky College of Law and has published numerous articles on fraud and abuse in the health care industry as well as other operational and regulatory issues facing health care providers. Robert currently is a member of the Kentucky Bar Association, the American Health Lawyers Association and the Health Care Compliance Association.

Robert has been a coach at Southeastern Cal Ripken baseball since 2007 and coaches I am 3rd girls youth soccer. He has also coached youth football for Lexington Catholic. Together with his wife of 18 years, Susan, he has two children, Annabella 11 and Robert 9 and a yellow Labrador retriever named Dutch.

The College of Law is a college of the University of Kentucky. Founded initially from a law program at Transylvania University in 1799, the law program at UK began operations in 1908; it was one of the nation's first public law schools. In 1913, the college became the first in the nation to institute a trial practice program, and is host to the tenth-oldest student-run law review publication in the United States. As noted, the UK College of Law began operations in 1908. It was housed in a structure now known as the Gillis Building from 1927 to 1936. In 1936, the College moved into the newly built Lafferty Hall. Lafferty Hall was named after William T. Lafferty, the first dean of the College of Law. The College of Law again relocated to its current building located on South Limestone in 1965. In 1913, the College began publication of the Kentucky Law Journal. The KLJ is the tenth-oldest student-run law journal in continuous publication in America. In 1925, the College was approved by the American Bar Association and was elected to the Order of the Coif in 1931.

Its authority to regulate the legal profession in Kentucky, delegated by the Kentucky Supreme Court through rules, is derived from the Kentucky Constitution.
