Biography

Richard focuses his practice in mechanical and electrical inventions, with an emphasis on computers, computer software, technology transfer, licensing and the organization of high technology businesses. He has particular experience in all areas of intellectual property, including:

* patents
* trademark and copyrights
* corporate and business startups
* licensing
* litigation
* negotiations
* computer law
* communications law

He has authored or co-authored more than 860 U.S. patents and many foreign counterparts. He was also attorney of record for approximately 1500 U.S. trademark applications and registrations.

Dick has appeared often on public television and radio and is the editor and chief author of Protecting Intellectual Property Under New Jersey Law, published by the Cambridge Institute, and co-author of the 1989 edition of Marketing Your Invention, a booklet published by the American Bar Association.

Dick also served as an elected member of the Princeton Borough Council for 11 years, including two years as Council president. He was subsequently elected committeeman for Princeton Township, where he served as mayor from 1991 through 1992.

Dick’s representative cases include H.W. Wilson Co. v. Princeton Microfilm.

Prior to joining the firm, Dick was a partner in the Princeton office of Synnestvedt & Lechner, LLP – a boutique intellectual property firm.

At the beginning of his career, Dick gained experience as a design engineer with the International Equipment Department of Proctor & Gamble, as an examiner in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and as an associate in the Washington office of the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie.

In 1980, after several years as a sole practitioner, he co-founded Matthews, Woodbridge & Collins, P.C., an IP firm that became one of the largest IP firms in New Jersey. In 1997, Dick left to start Woodbridge & Associates, P.C. in order to focus on the Internet, communications and electronic patent needs of businesses in New Jersey. His firm joined Synnestvedt & Lechner, LLP in 2003.

Dick served as the president of the Princeton University Class of 1965 (2005-2010) and was elected to the Executive Committee of University Alumni Council in 2008. He has also been elected to the Trustee Selector Committee at The Lawrenceville School in 2008.

Dick has been a member of the New Jersey Title 19 Voting Machine Committee from 1982 through 2014, acting as chair from 1998 to 2014. He was also a volunteer fireman for Princeton Engine Company No. 1, from 1975 to 1995.

In addition, Dick was selected to participate in the Greater Naples Leadership Masters Class XXI. The GNL Masters Program is a foundation for many of the future leaders of South West Florida.
