Peter is our general counsel.

As General Counsel, Peter is ‘lawyer to the lawyers’. Working in partnership with our Directors of Risk and HR he is responsible for risk management and professional standards. He also advises partners and the partnership on legal issues, compliance, professional indemnity and Freshfields’ structural arrangements.

Peter originally joined our Tax practice in 1975, becoming a partner in 1980 and spending three years in our New York office in the mid 1980s. He moved to our Employment Pensions and Benefits (EPB) practice in 1992.

Peter has long been involved in the management of the firm, focusing particularly on its taxation and financial affairs. He was a member of the Finance Committee from 1985 to 2001 and of the Partnership Council between 1990 and 1992. Peter served as Practice Group leader for the EPB practice from 1992 to 2001 when he was appointed our Managing Partner. He remained in that role until becoming General Counsel in January 2011.
