Biography

Paula Wallace founded SCAD in Savannah, Georgia, in 1978. In the past 20 years, she has led the university's expansion to locations in Atlanta, and Lacoste, France, and pioneered SCAD eLearning. With more than 100 academic degree programs and 15,000 currently enrolled students, SCAD is the preeminent source of knowledge in every discipline it teaches and has prepared more than 43,000 alumni for creative professions worldwide. Over the decades, Wallace has created internationally renowned fashion showcases and signature events, and she is widely heralded as a global luminary of aesthetic and style. Under Wallace's direction, SCADstyle gathers top design minds from around the globe for three days of premiere fashion exhibitions and industry insight at SCAD Atlanta, and Savannah. Leading-edge artist and internationally adored fashionista Guo Pei called Wallace's university the creative cradle that gives birth to miracles, and Wallace's award-winning SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film hosted the first solo exhibition of Guo Pei's work in the U.S. Wallace penned Guo Pei: Couture Beyond, the first major book on the fashion visionary and a testament to Wallace's commitment to education and thought leadership. She has directed critically acclaimed SCAD Films projects profiling the likes of Pierre Cardin and Oscar de la Renta. She supervised the curation of exhibitions such as Cinematic Couture, which featured fashion and costuming from Academy Award-winning films, and Unapologetic Lines, the first-ever U.S. solo exhibition of leading fashion illustrator Marc Antoine Coulon. In the wake of the iconic Karl Lagerfeld's passing, her WWD Think Tank essay honoring his generosity resonated with millions of leaders and proudly contributed to canon of tributes to the late artist. Wallace is an honorary member of the AIA, a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council, a member of the Advisory Board of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She is a recipient of the ASID Nancy Vincent McClelland Merit Award, the Arthur Ross Award for Stewardship, the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award, and a Roger Milliken Honorary AIA Legacy Award. Wallace has also been named among Blouin Artinfo's ''Power List: High-Wattage Women of the Art World'' and Cond Nast's ''Daring 25.'' The French Embassy in the United States of America appointed Wallace a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Acadmiques, the Georgia Historical Society named her a Georgia Trustee, the City of Atlanta presented her with a Phoenix Award, the City of Savannah awarded her a key to the city, and DesignIntelligence named her to its ''30 Most Admired Educators.''

Founded in 1826, Furman is the oldest private university in South Carolina. The school is named for Richard Furman, a clergyman considered the most important Baptist leader before the Civil War. Furman was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Charleston, S.C., and became the first president of the Triennial Convention, the first national body of Baptists in America. The South Carolina Baptist Convention established Furman’s original campus in Edgefield, S.C., but over the next three decades, the campus changed locations three times before arriving in downtown Greenville, S.C., in 1851. Originally founded as a men’s academy and theological institute, the theological school broke away from Furman in 1858 to become the Southern Baptist Seminary. In 1924, Furman was named one of four collegiate beneficiaries of the Duke Endowment. The Duke Endowment grants sustained Furman through the Great Depression, helped the university coordinate with Greenville Woman’s College in the 1930s, and bolstered the university’s effort to pursue a new campus location. Furman broke ground on its current location north of its home city in 1953. The school would also become independent in 1992, breaking ties with the South Carolina Baptist Convention. Today, Furman’s 750-acre campus features an Asian garden, a replica of Henry David Thoreau’s cabin, the David E. Shi Center for Sustainability, a Florentine bell tower, a spring-fed lake, 13 miles of paved trails through the woodlands and an 18-hole golf course. It’s not just the school’s beautiful location that makes Furman a great place to learn. Throughout the years, the university has worked to strengthen its residential campus community, rich student life, and rigorous academics.
