Government Pension Fund - Global (GPFG) is the Government of Norway's Pension Fund, a continuation of the former Petroleum Fund which was created in 1990 to support government saving to finance pension expenditures and underpin long-term considerations in the use of Norway's petroleum revenue.Based in Oslo, the GPFG was established by the Norwegian parliament through the Government Pension Fund Act. The Fund is administered by the Ministry of Finance, which is advised by Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), a subsidiary of Norges Bank, on the strategic direction of the fund. The Ministry of Finance sets the key requirements for the fund's investments, the investment universe and asset mix, the maximum holdings in individual companies, the limits for Norges Bank's active management and the fund's ethical guidelines. As an instrument for ensuring that a reasonable share of Norway's petroleum wealth benefits future generations, there is an ethical obligation for NBIM to manage the fund responsibly so that it produces a good long-term return.
