Founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, it became Spelman College in 1924 and have since held the distinction of being America's oldest historically Black college for women. Now a global leader in the education of women of African descent, Spelman College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and they are proud members of the Atlanta University Center Consortium. Today their student body comprises more than 2,100 students from 41 states and 15 foreign countries. The Alabama Power Foundation was created in 1989 with funds donated by Alabama Power shareholders. That seed money, along with additional donations over the next seven years, came from voluntary contributions and includes no ratepayer dollars. Through wise management, the foundation’s assets have grown to more than $140 million. Income earned from those funds is used to support a variety of grants and initiatives across Alabama.

The firm owns coal reserves near its Plant Gorgas and uses the output of coal from the reserves in its generating plants. It also sells, and cooperates with dealers in promoting the sale of electric appliances. The company was founded by William Patrick Lay, James Mitchell and Thomas W. Martin on December 4, 1906 and is headquartered in Birmingham, AL.
