Biography

Mehran Arjomand is co-chair of the firm’s Inter Partes Review and Post Grant Practice. Mr. Arjomand began his legal career as a litigator. After five years, he joined Morrison & Foerster, where he developed a strong foundation in PTO prosecution and procedure.

With his combined litigation and prosecution experience, Mr. Arjomand regularly oversees adversarial proceedings at the PTO and has led the firm’s Patent Reexamination Group and currently co-leads the Inter Partes Review and Post-Grant Practice Group. Mr. Arjomand has handled or advised on more than 30 inter partes review proceedings and more than 50 inter partes and ex parte reexaminations. He has experience initiating inter partes reviews for petitioners, defending inter partes reviews for patent owners and leading reexaminations at all stages, from filing to appeal. Mr. Arjomand also regularly counsels clients on adversarial PTO proceedings co-pending with litigation.

Representative completed inter partes reviews include the following.

* IPR2013-00149
Shortly after inter partes reviews became available, filed and led this review for petitioner Wavelock Advanced Technology. All pending claims were subsequently cancelled by patent owner.

* IPR2013-00593, -00594, -00597, -00598
Represented petitioner Yamaha in a series of inter partes reviews in which all pending claims were found unpatentable in final written decisions by the PTO.

* IPR2014-01029, -01369
Defended patent owner Netlist against two inter partes reviews by different parties. After filing preliminary responses, the PTO denied both petitions.

Representative completed inter partes and ex parte reexaminations include the following.

* Reexamination Control No. 95/001,734
Prepared and led inter partes reexamination of patent asserted against Yahoo! All pending claims were cancelled.

* Reexamination Control No. 90/011,602
After filing this ex parte reexamination request, the PTO adopted the proposed rejections and ultimately cancelled all pending original and new claims.

* Reexamination Control No. 95/000,293
Prepared and oversaw this inter partes reexamination of a patent asserted against EchoStar. All pending claims were cancelled or amended. The matter settled favorably for EchoStar.

In addition to his practice relating to adversarial PTO proceedings, Mr. Arjomand regularly prosecutes patent applications. He concentrates his prosecution work on consumer electronics, semiconductor processing, and automotive technologies. Mr. Arjomand works closely with clients in these industries to develop and manage their patent portfolios, with a particular emphasis on Japanese companies. Mr. Arjomand lived in Japan in 2008.

Mr. Arjomand received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991, where he graduated with high honors. He obtained his J.D. from Berkeley Law (Boalt Hall) in 1995.

Mr. Arjomand is admitted to practice in California and is registered to practice before the PTO.

The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, commonly referred to as Berkeley Law and Boalt Hall, is one of 14 schools and colleges at the University of California, Berkeley. Berkeley Law is consistently ranked as one of the top law schools in the nation, with acceptance rates lower than every school except Yale and Stanford. The Department of Jurisprudence was founded at Berkeley in 1894. In 1912, the department was renamed the School of Jurisprudence, which was then renamed the School of Law in 1950. The School was originally located in the center of the main UC Berkeley campus in the Boalt Memorial Hall of Law, built in 1911 with funds largely from Elizabeth Josselyn Boalt donated in memory of her late husband, John Henry Boalt. In 1951, the School moved to its current location in the new Boalt Hall, at the southeast corner of the campus, and the old Boalt Hall was renamed Durant Hall. In April 2008, the law school rebranded itself from "Boalt Hall" to "Berkeley Law", in order to more closely tie the law school's name with the campus upon which it resides. The administration hopes that this move will further increase the law school's prestige, since people will now associate it with the Berkeley campus.
