Biography

Max joined Sterling in 2015 as the firm’s first in-house legal counsel. Prior to Sterling, Max worked in the private equity groups of Kirkland & Ellis LLP and Ropes & Gray LLP, where his practice focused on representing private equity firms and strategic investors in leveraged buyouts, minority investments, public and private mergers, acquisitions and divestitures and other general corporate matters. Max received a B.A. with honors in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a J.D. with honors from the Emory University School of Law.

The Sterling Group focuses on investments in middle-market, US and Canadian companies in the manufacturing, distribution and industrial services sectors. The firm targets companies with EBITDA greater than $15 million and enterprise values of $100 million to $500 million. Almost half of the firm's portfolio companies were acquired from Fortune 1000 corporations. The Sterling Group has also acquired numerous family-owned businesses and has acquired companies from other private equity firms. They look for companies with experienced management teams, strong market positions and a history of positive cash flow. The Sterling Group also looks for companies for the potential for growth through industry growth, product line expansion or add-on acquisitions. The firm seeks opportunities to improve a company financially through the implementation of operational initiatives. Investments range from $40 million to $100 million.
