Biography

Martin Sorensen offers a critical and analytical approach to tax matters that minimizes risk and maximizes profit. When a dispute arises, Martin works to resolve the issue quickly and efficiently, resulting in the best possible outcome for our clients.

Martin's practice focuses on tax planning and tax litigation. He acts in matters related to corporate and international tax planning, debt financing transactions and foreign entities carrying on business in Canada. Martin also advises on general income tax matters, federal and provincial sales taxes, provincial mining taxes, and payroll taxes.

Martin represents both individual and corporate clients on federal and provincial tax litigation matters, including disputes under the Excise Tax Act, the Income Tax Act, the Corporations Tax Act, the Land Transfer Tax Act and the Employer Health Tax Act.

Martin is a former chair of the Ontario Bar Association (Tax Section) and is a member of the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee of the Canadian Tax Foundation, the International Fiscal Association and the Advocates' Society. To complement his practice, he has completed the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants In-Depth Tax Course.

Martin is also currently teaching corporate taxation at the Queen's University Faculty of Law and is a contributing editor to Taxation of Corporations, Partnerships and Trusts, 5th Edition (Thomson Carswell).

Queen's University at Kingston (commonly shortened to Queen's University or Queen's) is a public research university located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Founded on 16 October 1841, the university predated the founding of Canada by 26 years. Queen's holds more than 1,400 hectares (3,500 acres) of land throughout Ontario and owns Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, England. Queen's is organized into ten undergraduate, graduate and professional faculties and schools. The Church of Scotland established Queen's College in 1841 with a royal charter from Queen Victoria. The first classes, intended to prepare students for the ministry, were held 7 March 1842 with 13 students and two professors. Queen's was the first university west of the maritime provinces to admit women, and to form a student government. In 1883, a women's college for medical education affiliated with Queen's University. In 1888, Queen's University began offering extension courses, becoming the first Canadian university to do so. In 1912, Queen's secularized and changed to its present legal name.
