Biography

Panero is Adjunct Professor and Director for Strategic Partnerships at NYIT. Responsibilities include serving as a resource to faculty and students on economics and project finance, mainly in student design projects and special topics courses; developing strategic partnerships and funding proposals, conducting own research and publishing research findings as well as promoting applied science research teams.

Prior to this position, Panero was a Research Scientist and the Deputy Director of the Rudin Center for Transportation. Her responsibilities included conducting research; fund raising and grants management; program management, including coordinating training programs for transportation agencies and organizing symposia and various conferences. Additional responsibilities included serving as the Associate Editor of the New York Transportation Journal.

Panero was involved in several research projects, including Urban Distribution Centers: A Means for Reducing Freight VMT sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA); Best Practices in Context Sensitive Solutions in Urban Centers, sponsored by the Mineta Transportation Institute; Feasibility of Freight Villages in the NYMTC Area, sponsored by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council; Integrative Freight Demand Management in the New York City Metropolitan Area, sponsored by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation; Assessing the Implementation and Impact of Public Participation Initiatives, sponsored by the Federal Transit Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation; and, Decision-Making in Planning, Appraisal, and Evaluation of Mega-Projects and their Impacts, sponsored by the Volvo Research & Education Foundations through the Center for Mega Urban Transportation Studies, University College of London.

Until August 2007, she directed the Industrial Ecology, Pollution Prevention and the New York/ New Jersey Harbor Project of the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), which she had joined in 1999 as a Policy Associate. During her tenure at NYAS, Panero was part of a multidisciplinary team that developed six reports on the flow of contaminated materials affecting the NY/NJ Harbor and its watershed. She continues to volunteer as a member of NYAS' Environmental Sciences section steering committee.

Panero received her Ph.D. in economics from the New School for Social Research with a concentration in sustainable economic development and environmental economics. She graduated Summa cum Laude from Fordham University with a B.A. in Social Studies. Panero grew up in Latin America and is fluent in both English and Spanish.

Founded in 1831, New York University is now one of the largest private universities in the United States.
