St. George’s Society of New York was founded in 1770 by English settlers for the purpose of offering advice and relief to fellow Englishmen in need or distress. Its mission today is to assist disadvantaged people of British and Commonwealth heritage living in the New York area. The Society provides two major forms of assistance, a Beneficiary Program helping elderly and disabled people, and a Scholarship Program at Lehman College (part of CUNY) supporting outstanding students with university tuition. St. George’s Society is a membership organization and our members are indispensible to the success and growth of the charity. We host a variety of events throughout the year including networking events, cocktail parties, in-store events and our largest annual fundraiser, the English Ball. The Society’s events often have a British flavor, which appeals to both to our increasingly diverse membership and to our corporate sponsors and partners. In March 2011, the Society launched GEORGE, a sub-brand for vibrant, dynamic professionals, which has hosted a number of successful networking events and attracted over 150 new members to St. George’s. GEORGE is a networking group with a charitable purpose and hosts its own large annual fundraiser known as ‘The Bash’ which features live entertainment, dinner, dancing and a British-themed auction. Visit the GEORGE page for more information. St. George’s Society of New York is a registered 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. The Society receives no government funding and its charitable programs are primarily funded by membership dues, donations and events.
