Biography

Growing up in San Antonio, Laura attended school in San Antonio Independent School District, which is where the majority of our corps members teach today. Indeed, Laura is the embodiment of what Teach For America – San Antonio is trying to achieve.

After graduating from Jefferson High School, Laura attended Georgetown University and then became a 2006 Rio Grande Valley corps members. As a high school English and ESL teacher, Laura led her students to achieve an 83 percent passing rate on the state ELA exam. Following the corps, Laura made transforming the educational opportunities of kids in San Antonio her life’s work. In 2010, Laura became the founding Executive Director of Teach For America – San Antonio.

Laura is dedicated to building lasting partnerships between staff, corps members, alumni, and the community, and believes that collective impact is essential to realizing our vision.

Teach For America (TFA) is a nonprofit organization whose stated mission is to "enlist, develop, and mobilize as many as possible of our nation's most promising future leaders to grow and strengthen the movement for educational equity and excellence." The organization aims to accomplish this by recruiting and selecting college graduates from top universities around the United States to serve as teachers. The selected members, known as "corps members," commit to teaching for at least two years in a public or public charter K–12 school in one of the 52 low-income communities that the organization serves.
