Mass Medical Angels (MMA) focuses on investments in early-stage life science companies including medical devices, therapeutics, diagnostics, healthcare services, health-related information technology and healthcare-relevant laboratory instruments. The group seeks to invest in companies that target a clear unmet market need with a potential addressable market of at least $50 million and preferably of more than $250 million. MMA invests in companies that have defined their product and have established publishable data which provides proof of concept for the product's efficacy. Companies should also possess intellectual property or some other advantage that prevents competitors from duplicating their products or services. MMA looks for capital efficient companies in which their investment will lead to significant step-ups in valuation to avoid unfavorable future funding rounds.Initial investments range from $200,000 to $500,000, with a total investment over the life of a company from $250,000 to $3 million. Depending on the amount of funding required, MMA can fund all or part of the round. They work closely with other angel groups or venture funds to complete the round. The group targets a 5x return within 5 years. They prefer investments structured as preferred stock. MMA may consider a convertible note structure which converts into the first venture capital round, if it is determined that the angels are being adequately compensated for the additional risk incurred. This may include a combination of a high interest rate, a discount from the round and/or warrants. A 10% discount or 10% warrant structure is generally not sufficient.
