Biography

Ms. Joan A. Payden, CFA, is a President & Chief Executive Officer at Payden & Rygel. She is on the Board of Directors at Town Hall Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History and University of Southern California. She founded Payden & Rygel in 1983 and has overseen the firm's international expansion and its growth. In 1992 the firm launched Payden & Rygel Investment Group, a family of mutual funds, of which she is chairman and chief executive officer. Subsequently many of these strategies were duplicated in UCITS funds domiciled in Ireland. In 1998 Payden & Rygel Global Ltd. was founded in London. In addition to the London office, in 2010 a Boston office was opened and more and opened the Milan, Italy office last year. At the same time, the firm established Metzler/Payden LLC, its joint venture with Metzler Bank, Germany's oldest private bank. She is also a member of the board of the Town Hall of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Sports Council, the California Chamber of Commerce, and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.She is past chairman of the Investment Counsel Association of America. Ms. Payden was employed as a Managing Director by Scudder Stevens & Clark Inc and a Board Member by University of California, Los Angeles. She also served on the board at AECOM. She earned a BA in Mathematics and Physics from Trinity Washington University.

P&R’s strategies include domestic fixed income; global fixed income; and domestic equity. Their investment process is based on team approach and the investment policy committee relies upon two groups in formulating investment policy. The first group is the investment strategy group which is comprised of several strategy teams that are responsible for developing portfolio structures that reflect both the macro directives of the investment policy committee and the securities that are available in the market. The second group portfolio management group which focuses on client-related issues in helping the investment policy committee and the particular investment strategy group or groups develop portfolio structure. The final step of the investment process is review and control, wherein portfolios are routinely checked for adherence to guidelines, consistency of structure and return attribution.

The LA84 Foundation is endowed with surplus funds from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Our mission is to serve youth through sport and to increase knowledge of sport and its impact on people’s lives. The LA84 Foundation supports a wide array of youth sports programming. We award grants to youth sports organizations within the eight southernmost counties of California. We also conduct our own youth sports and coaching education programs, a number of which have become models for similar programs nationwide. The LA84 Foundation operates the largest sports research library in North America, the Paul Ziffren Sports Resource Center. It is a state-of-the-art research facility and learning center dedicated to the advancement of sports knowledge and scholarship. The Foundation also maintains a sizable collection of historic sport art and artifacts much of which was inherited from the former Helms Athletic Foundation Sports Halls of Fame. The LA84 Foundation is a private nonprofit institution. The Foundation has committed more than $214 million to accomplish its mission since 1985. To date, more than 3 million boys and girls, and more than 1,100 youth sports organizations throughout Southern California have benefited from the endowment.
