It all began with sportswear. Established in 1979, the Koret Foundation was seeded with the estates of Joseph and Stephanie Koret, whose Koret of California sportswear line was a leader in ladies' coordinated fashion. Due to wise investments made by Tad Taube, now Koret Foundation President, today the Foundation has grown into a Bay Area philanthropy with assets of more than $400 million. Joseph Koret was the foundation's first chairman — a position he held until his death in 1982, when his portion of his family's substantial estate flowed to the foundation and his second wife, Susan, became board chair for life. Over the years, the Foundation's priorities have evolved from feeding the hungry, caring for the elderly, and providing for the needy to contemporary program areas. These include public policy initiatives, K-12 education reform, free-market economic expansion in Israel, a thriving Bay Area cultural landscape, and the Koret Taube Initiative on Jewish Peoplehood. Since 1979, the Koret Foundation has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in strengthening the communities of the Bay Area and Israel. Its cumulative philanthropic investment is currently approaching $500 million.

The James Irvine Foundation's mission is to expand opportunity for the people of California to participate in a vibrant, successful and inclusive society. James Irvine, a California agricultural pioneer, established the Foundation in 1937 to benefit the people of California. Since then, the Foundation has met the objectives of its founder by providing more than $1.3 billion in grants to over 3,500 nonprofit organizations across the state. The guiding principle in all our grantmaking is the idea of expanding opportunity. In our Youth program, that means helping students build a strong foundation for college and career success. In the Arts, it means fostering creativity and nurturing a rich cultural environment. And through our California Democracy program, it means advancing effective public policy decision making that is reflective of and responsive to all Californians. Our Goals In pursuing our mission, we are guided by the following goals: Advance the educational and economic prospects of low-income Californians to share in and create California's prosperity. Engage a broad cross section of Californians in the civic and cultural life of their communities and the state. Enhance mutual understanding and communication among diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Enrich the state's intellectual and creative environment.
