Biography

Jennifer J. Banks is Co-Chief Operating Officer, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. As Co-Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Banks oversees the company’s risk management operations. She joined Alexandria in 2002 and has served as the company’s General Counsel since 2008. In her role as General Counsel, Ms. Banks and leads a team that advises the company on a range of legal matters, including acquisitions and dispositions, construction and development, litigation, investment, compliance, intellectual property, leasing, property management, and joint ventures. Ms. Banks has over 19 years of commercial real estate and related legal experience.

She previously practiced law in the real estate departments of Skadden, Arps, Meagher & Flom LLP and O’Melveny & Myers LLP, where she specialized in acquisition, complex leasing, joint venture, lending, and other finance transactions and represented a variety of REITs, private developers, and institutional investors.

Ms. Banks is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), serves on the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Executive Committee of the Corporate Law Departments Section, and is the former Vice Chair of the ABA’s Green and Sustainable Transactions Committee. She also serves on the City of Hope’s Los Angeles Real Estate & Construction Industries Council’s Executive Committee.

In 2017, Ms. Banks was named a finalist in the Los Angeles Business Journal’s Leaders in the Law Awards in the Corporate Counsel category. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and her Juris Doctor degree from Stanford Law School.

Stanford began offering a curriculum in legal studies in 1893, when the university engaged its first two law professors. One was Benjamin Harrison, former President of the United States, who delivered a landmark series of lectures on the Constitution. The other was Nathan Abbott, who served as head of the nascent law program. Abbott assembled a small faculty to which he imparted a standard of rigor and excellence that endures to this day.In an effort to acknowledge the emerging professional nature of the department, Stanford's Board of Trustees passed a resolution in 1908 to substitute the term 'law school' for 'law department,' though technically the law program remained a department within the university.The law school was at the forefront of efforts to institute the California Bar exam, which was added to the requirements to practice law in California in 1919. The law school was accredited by the American Bar Association in 1923, the year the ABA began certifying law schools.
