Biography

James Alterbaum, a senior partner in the Corporate/M&A practice, Chairman of its Accounting Law practice and lead partner of the Firm's Long Island, NY practice, has over 30 years experience in corporate, securities, commercial and employment law. With a background in accounting and finance, Jim takes a business and entrepreneurial approach to the law.

Jim's practice serves public, private, and corporate clients in diversified fields, including the food, manufacturing, distribution, health care and technology industries. Jim has particular expertise in serving closely-held and family multi-generational firms facing business and corporate governance challenges, including the structuring of M&A transactions, refinancing, public and private offerings and succession plans. Jim places heavy emphasis on the strategic decision-making surrounding these transactions and focuses particularly on the negotiation process, through all its stages.

Working with many professionals in other disciplines, including investment bankers, financing sources, accountants, valuation and wealth management experts, Jim strives to provide a value-added approach to the law that cuts across a variety of practice areas.

As noted in his Testimonials, Jim earns substantial praise from clients and industry experts for his business acumen and no-nonsense approach towards solving complex issues. For example, a client wrote:

“There are many types of lawyers out there. But in my book, Jim Alterbaum is the total package. And he has a tremendous firm behind him. He is a lawyer that really helps to make a deal happen, but also has the strength of character to tell the client ‘no.’ He knows what's important and ignores the noise. He gives advice with the sensibility of a business person but with the hard earned experience of a seasoned lawyer. His integrity is unquestioned, his work ethic is tremendous and his willingness to help his friends and clients is unsurpassed. I recommend him.”

Jim is a well-regarded public speaker, who lectures regularly for the National Business Institute and for the Long Island incubator, LaunchPad. A well-versed author and contributor to Aspatore’s Corporate Law Best Practices, Jim has written numerous trade articles, and has appeared on such programs as CNBC's Money Talk, Today's Business, WLIE and Sky Radio, and has been interviewed by The New York Times, Crain’s New York Business, Long Island Business News, and Entrepreneur magazine.

A recipient of Columbia University's "Mentor of the Year" award, Jim is active on the Portfolio Advisory Board of the Eugene M. Lang Center for Entrepreneurship of Columbia University's School of Business, where he lectures to MBA students. He is a member of the Long Island chapter of The Institute of Management Accountants and serves on the Advisory Board for Sterling National Bank and on the Bank of America US Trust's Advisory Council.

Located in New Haven, Connecticut, Yale Law School is one of the world’s premier law schools. It offers an unmatched environment of excellence and educational intimacy in the form of world renowned faculty, small classes, limitless opportunities for clinical training, and strong encouragement of public service. The Law School is small by design; its impact on the world is measured by its accomplished graduates and its ongoing scholarship and outreach through numerous centers and projects. For students, the experience is unparalleled. The faculty-student ratio supports a vast array of courses and opportunities for independent research and student-organized seminars. Students get practical training by representing real clients in clinics starting in their first year. Throughout, a spirit of collaboration reigns. All first-term courses are ungraded, and subsequent classes are graded honors/pass/low pass. Yale Law School is unique among law schools in that it produces leaders in all walks of life: distinguished deans and faculty members at law schools across the country and the world; industry CEOs and corporate counsels; founders of nongovernmental organizations and other nonprofit entities; entrepreneurs; government servants in federal, state, and local offices and the judiciary--just a few areas in which our alumni's talent and passion and dedication have made a difference. Among the School’s graduates are U.S. Presidents and Supreme Court Justices; and among its far-reaching projects, the Information Society Project and the China Center.
