Demand for Latin America’s mineral, agricultural and energy wealth is fueling regional growth. Poverty is falling, social indices are rising, and regional GDP is predicted to double in a decade. But natural ecosystems must be conserved, along with the services they provide to society, for regional development to endure. Into this reality the Latin America Conservation Council was born in 2011. Council Members are leveraging their collective expertise, influence and resources to help conserve Latin America’s “natural capital” – its healthy rivers, forests and seas – and to develop innovative, pragmatic and scalable solutions to three widespread environmental challenges: Water Security, Sustainable Food Security and Smart Infrastructure. Working with civil society, government and the private sector, the Council calls for the region to become “best in class” in caring for nature, while providing for people. The time for action is now.

In 1955, Raul Cortez founded KCOR-TV (channel 41, now KWEX-DT) in San Antonio, Texas; the station's call letters were later changed to KUAL-TV. The station was not profitable, and in 1961, Cortez sold it to a group headed by his son-in-law Emilio Nicolas, Sr. and Mexican entertainment mogul Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta. Nicolas had helped produce channel 41's variety programs, while Azcárraga was the owner of Telesistema Mexicano, forerunner of Televisa. The new owners turned the station around, and in 1962, signed on KMEX-TV (channel 34) in Los Angeles; this was followed in 1968 by the sign-on of New York City area station WXTV (channel 41) in Paterson, New Jersey. These stations formed the nucleus of the Spanish International Network, the first television network in the United States to broadcast in a language other than English.

Speaker
Davos, Switzerland
2008 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting

The World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2008 convened in Davos at a time of great anxiety in the world. The turmoil in the financial markets and the continuing conflict in the Middle East were naturally of immediate concern. Mounting awareness of the epochal challenge of climate change and the looming threat of global terrorism, two issues that were addressed in the opening plenary session, heightened our shared sense of urgency. The Annual Meeting theme - The Power of Collaborative Innovation - was a fitting focus for two reasons. First, it highlighted that a multistakeholder approach is critical for any authentic and viable solutions to global problems. And second, it served to underline the need for new and imaginative ways to mitigate global risks and the importance of achieving tangible results or value.
