Biography

Dorothy Lemelson serves as chair of The Lemelson Foundation, continuing the direction she and her late husband, Jerome Lemelson, set to inspire future generations of inventors. Born and raised in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Dorothy graduated from Parsons School of Design in Manhattan. She established herself professionally as an interior designer and owner of Dorothy Ginsberg and Associates in New Jersey. For many years, her work provided financial support to her family, while her husband, Jerry, pursued his work as an independent inventor.

In addition to her efforts on behalf of The Lemelson Foundation, Dorothy personally supports K-12 education and arts organizations and was an early advocate for the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in K-12 public schools. In 2013, the Dorothy Lemelson STEM Academy, a public elementary school in Reno, Nevada, was named for Dorothy in recognition of her scholarship program, which has provided close to 300 teachers access to Literacy and STEM master’s degrees from the University of Nevada.

Dorothy’s two sons, Eric and Robert, also are directors of The Lemelson Foundation.
