Biography

Derria Banta joined Platte River Equity in 2012 as Chief Financial Officer, having led fund administration for Platte River Equity on an outsourced basis since the firm’s inception in 2006. Ms. Banta has been working with private equity and venture capital firms for the past decade, with direct responsibility over financial statements, accounting and tax matters. Prior to joining Platte River Equity, Ms. Banta was President of an accounting firm she co-founded in 2008 to provide outsourced accounting and financial services to private equity and venture capital firms.

Previously, Ms. Banta was the Vice President of Finance and Administration for Centennial Ventures, a Denver-based venture capital firm with over $1 billion under management. Ms. Banta started her career with a nationally recognized public accounting firm. Ms. Banta is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Wyoming.

University of Wyoming

The University of Wyoming is a land-grant university located in Laramie, Wyoming, situated on Wyoming's high Laramie Plains, at an elevation of 7,220 feet (2194 m), between the Laramie and Snowy Range mountains. It is known as UW (often pronounced "U-Dub") to people close to the university. The university was founded in March 1886, four years before the territory was admitted as the 44th state, and opened in September 1887. The University of Wyoming is unusual in that its location within the state is written into the state's constitution. The university also offers outreach education in communities throughout Wyoming and online. The University of Wyoming consists of seven colleges: agriculture and natural resources, arts and sciences, business, education, engineering and applied sciences, health sciences, and law. The university offers over 120 undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs including Doctor of Pharmacy and Juris Doctor. The University of Wyoming was featured in the 2011 Princeton Review Best 373 Colleges. In addition to on-campus classes in Laramie, the university's Outreach School offers more than 41 degree, certificate and endorsement programs to distance learners across the state and beyond. These programs are delivered through the use of technology, such as online and video conferencing classes. The Outreach School has nine regional centers in the state, with several on community college campuses, to give Wyoming residents access to a university education without relocating to Laramie.

The firm invests in a broad range of transactions, including management buyouts, recapitalizations, and corporate divestitures, as well as growth equity investments in companies in need of expansion capital.Platte River pursues transactions in which they believes it has a meaningful competitive edge, generally as a result of previous industry experience among their investment professionals, transactions with management teams with whom the investment professionals had previous experience or other institutional knowledge. In general, the firm capitalizes heavily on the significant operating experience of its principals as a value-added investor following the closing of its investments.Platte River invests in companies that have some or all of the following characteristics: industries in which the firm's principals have significant operating experience, management teams with which the firm's principals have had prior relationships, strong management teams with visions for their companies' futures, critical supply relationships with their customers, opportunities for significant growth potential or upside, potentially out-of-favor industries with improving prospects, fragmented industries, which can benefit from consolidation and sustainable barriers to entry.The firm expects to benefit from proprietary deal flow, with a particular focus on the following industries: aerospace manufacturing and services, metals, chemicals, energy and energy services, natural resources, financial services and communications and communications infrastructure.In addition to control investments in management buyouts and recapitalization transactions, Platte River also opportunistically pursues equity investments in companies that require growth capital for capacity expansion, to develop new products or to make add-on acquisitions.The operating experience of the firm's principals is one of the primary factors differentiating Platte River from other private equity firms. The firm intends to capitalize on this experience by taking an active, value-added role in its interactions with most of its portfolio companies. In most cases, Platte River's professionals will provide strategic, financial and operating support through both active board participation and regular dialog with management. Specifically, Platte River's professionals assist portfolio companies in developing operating and capital budgets, assessing new business opportunities, assisting with evaluation of follow-on acquisition candidates, designing incentive compensation plans, hiring key employees and executing exit strategies. Platte River's professionals also take the lead, when appropriate, in arranging any financings for portfolio companies.
