Deborah Carey Johnson, RN is president and CEO of Eastern Maine Medical Center, a 411-bed acute care tertiary referral hospital for northern, eastern and central Maine. EMMC offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient specialty and primary care services. Debbie has nearly 30 years of progressive experience in hospital administration and had a proven track record of clinical, operational and financial success in a complex healthcare organization.

Debbie promotes the organization’s mission, vision, and values by keeping a balanced focus on people, service, quality and safety, finance, growth, and the communities served by EMMC. She is a results oriented, decisive leader with success in problem solving and promoting a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and service excellence.

As president, Debbie has overseen the transformation of care at EMMC with the widespread implementation of information technology and the development of centers of excellence for several service lines. EMMC has received national recognition for its work on information technology innovation, clinical quality initiatives, and patient service. She is committed to the pursuit of a culture of excellence related to safety, clinical quality and service.

Debbie also serves as senior vice president of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems (EMHS), the parent organization. In this role she participates in system wide strategic planning and organizational development.

She began working at EMMC in 1974 as a staff nurse in Critical Care and has held progressive administrative roles since that time, becoming president in 2004. Debbie graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of the State of New York and a Masters Degree in Business from Husson College. She is a member of several professional and civic organizations and has served on the Boards of Maine Network for Health, Maine Hospital Association, American Heart Association Penobscot Division, Bangor Rotary Club, United Way of Eastern Maine, and Public Health Advisory Board for the Greater Bangor Area.

Debbie and her husband, Steve Johnson have two children and live in Hampden, Maine.
