Biography

David N. DeJong earned his Bachelor of Arts degree (summa cum laude) from Central College in Iowa in 1985 and his doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1989, both in economics. He joined the University of Pittsburgh as an Assistant Professor in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Economics in 1989; he was promoted to Professor in 2001 and served as Department Chair from 2006-2010. He currently serves as Executive Vice Provost. He has also served as a Visiting Professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna, DiTella University in Buenos Aires, and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Kiel, Germany.

As a Professor, DeJong’s service beyond scholarly and instructional activities included service as a member of or representative to the University Planning and Budgeting Committee’s Parameters Subcommittee, the Advisory Committee for the Admission of Student Athletes, the NCAA Athletics Certification Subcommittee on Academic Integrity, the Faculty Admissions Support Team, and the Budget Committee of the Board of Trustees.

As Executive Vice Provost, David DeJong is responsible for the coordination of academic planning within the University and its integration with resource allocation. Resource allocation entails management of budgets, space, and capital planning within the Provost’s Area, including academic and student life activities.

The Executive Vice Provost's overall responsibility is to ensure that the University’s strategic goals are advanced through the efficient use of its varied resources. The position also entails oversight of academic issues involving student athletes, service as the University Customer Information Security Officer, and ensuring smooth operation of the Office of the Provost.

Research Interests

DeJong’s research focuses on macroeconomics, econometrics, and transition economics. He specifically focuses on the formal statistical implementation of theoretical models for the purpose of forecasting aggregate economic activity. His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research. He has published widely in top general-interest and leading field journals. In addition to publishing more than 40 refereed journal articles, he is the coauthor of the textbook Structural Macroeconomics (Princeton University Press, 2007). He also served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics from 2000 to 2006.

The Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences constitutes the liberal arts core of the University of Pittsburgh, one of the major public research universities in the United States.They provide instruction in natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences for all students studying at the Pittsburgh campus, including more than 10,000 students registered as Dietrich School undergraduates. In addition, the Dietrich School educates 15 percent—more than 1,500—of the University’s graduate and graduate professional students, making it the largest graduate program in Pittsburgh. In the summer of 2006, the University’s College of General Studies joined the (then) School of Arts and Sciences, expanding the community of learners to include nontraditional students.
