Biography

Dr. Kass is the Abraham and Virginia Weiss Professor of Cardiology, Professor of Medicine and of Biomedical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University Medical Institutions. He is also a Professor in the Graduate Programs of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Pathobiology. Dr. Kass received his BA in Applied Physics and Engineering from Harvard University, medical degree from Yale University, and following medical residency at George Washington University, he joined the Cardiology Division at Johns Hopkins in 1983, first as a Fellow, and later faculty, where he has remained since. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, Association of University Cardiologists, American Association of Physicians, and an Associate Editor of Circulation Research. His many honors and awards include the inaugural Melvin Marcus Award, George E. Brown Lectureship, the 2008 Basic Science Achievement Award from the American Heart Association, the Professor's Award for Distinction in Teaching and David Levine Mentorship Awards from Johns Hopkins University. He has trained >60 fellows in his lab, many occupying leadership positions in academic centers world-wide. His CV lists over 260 papers in leading journals, and he has a long established funding record from the NIH, AHA, and other agencies. He is a world leader in integrative cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology, focusing on mechanisms of heart failure and hypertrophy and developing new treatments for these diseases. His work is truly translational, spanning sophisticated molecular and cellular studies through to investigations at the intact organ level in animal models, and in human clinical studies and trials. His contributions include many basic and clinical studies on cardiac function, ventricular-arterial interaction, vascular stiffening and mechano-signaling, and include landmark clinical and basic science investigations on cardiac resynchronization therapy, the leading new treatment adapted for heart failure over the past decade, and on new mechanisms and approaches to treat heart failure/hypertrophy. Prominent recent examples are his laboratory's discovery of a striking and novel effect of the phosphodiesterase inhibitor, sildenafil (Viagra) on suppressing cardiac hypertrophy and improving function in hearts exposed to pressure-overload, and the potential role of inadequate atrial rate-response as a factor in clinical heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction patients. Both findings have formed the basis of ongoing national multi-center clinical trials. Dr. Kass holds several patents for heart failure diagnostics and novel therapeutics, and is also the co-founder of Robin Medical, a bio-engineering company developing magnetic resonance imaging based tracking technology.
