Master Degree in Business Administration
Class of 1983

On February 18, 1919, the dean of Emory College, Howard Odum, recommended the creation of a “school of economics and business administration” to the Board of Trustees. Thus, in the fall of 1919, the new school worked with Emory College to offer courses in economics, accounting, and business law. By 1925, there was one faculty member and full-time assistant, five staff members and 145 students. In 1926, eight students received the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Two decades after the school awarded degrees in business administration, the school accepted its first female student in 1954. In the same year, the MBA program commenced, with 19 registered students. Goizueta Business School In 1992, the evening MBA program was introduced. At the same time, the school was achieving greater validation for its programs. When the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business began accrediting master’s programs, Emory’s program was one of the first to be approved. Four years later, Emory appeared on the list of the top American colleges and universities producing U.S. executives. This newfound acclaim accompanied new programs, such as the concentration within the MBA program for professional accounting and, in 1979, the Executive MBA program. Also at this time, the school created a plan to allow students to complete both the MBA and Juris Doctor degree within four years. Rankings of the school’s programs highlight the results of thoughtful and steady expansion. In 1986, the Executive MBA program was ranked in the top 15 in a Business Week survey. In 1994, the school was renamed for Roberto C. Goizueta, a much admired and successful business leader. More than providing a namesake for the school, Roberto C. Goizueta placed his philosophical stamp on the school’s academic and financial development. Goizueta proclaimed, “Business schools today cannot just reflect business the way it is. They must teach business the way it will be.” The millennium brought about a new PhD program in business administration and a new program in Real Estate. Goizueta Business School installed its current dean, Professor Larry Benveniste, in 2005

The University of Virginia (often abbreviated as UVA, UVa, or Virginia) is a public research university in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. It was conceived and designed by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, and established in 1819. UVA's initial Board of Visitors included former Presidents of the United States Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Monroe owned the initial site of the University, which was mostly farmland. His law office and farmhouse are now the site of Brown College at Monroe Hill, a residential college at UVA. UVA is one of the eight original Public Ivy universities, and it is the only university campus in the United States that is designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In the 2013 edition of U.S. News and World Report's National University Rankings, the school was listed as America's 2nd best public university; tied with UCLA and surpassed only by UC Berkeley.

The Lovett School is an independent, coeducational day school serving children from Kindergarten through Grade 12. The school was established in 1926 by Mrs. Eva Edwards Lovett, an innovative educator who emphasized the development of the whole child. She began the school with just 20 boys and girls in Grades 1-3 at a former home, and today Lovett has more than 1,550 students from 78 different zip codes and 11 counties in the metropolitan area. The school continually affirms Eva Edwards Lovett’s founding vision of a progressive education rooted in learning, character, and community. Our mission is to graduate young men and women of honor, faith, and wisdom and prepare them to succeed in college and as responsible citizens of the world. We support this mission by offering our students integrated experiences in academics, arts, athletics, and service. Through these experiences, we seek to develop the whole child. As a college-preparatory institution, our coursework is strong, and creative and critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and a love of learning are major objectives. Our curriculum includes a required year of American Studies; options for African, Asian, and gender studies; and organic and biochemistry. We were one of the first schools in Georgia to offer the AP Chinese exam, the culmination of a Chinese studies program that begins in the Lower School. In addition, we offer a one-to-one laptop program in Grades 4-9, and single-gender classes in Grades 6-8. The Upper School offers 24 honors and 18 advanced placement courses, and all of Lovett's graduates are admitted to four-year colleges from coast to coast and internationally. Our faculty is committed to ongoing professional development and using best practices in their teaching. They strive to be positive role models and are dedicated to encouraging and supporting students in the pursuit of excellence. The average faculty teaching experience is 17 years. Outside the classroom, Lovett encourages our students to discover themselves through the arts and athletics. The statistics bear this out: More than 90 percent of our student body participates in a Fine Arts activity during the year, and close to 80 percent of students in Grades 7-12 are members of at least one sports team. The Lovett community is guided by the school’s character pledge, which begins: "We, who are members of the Lovett community, seek to live lives of good character." Lovett welcomes students of many different faiths and backgrounds. Although not formally affiliated with any specific denomination, Lovett’s philosophy is rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition and values and encourages a sense of responsibility to God, respect for diversity, service to others, and moral awareness. We are committed to making positive contributions to society, for the betterment of our community, our environment, and our world, and thus service and sustainability are key. Our school’s reach extends beyond Atlanta and into Central America, where Lovett maintains 825 acres of Ecuadoran cloudforest as a preserve and research center. Closer to home, Lovett’s newest building, our Middle School, is LEED-Gold certified, and school vehicles run on biodiesel converted from our cafeteria’s used cooking oil.
