Biography

Captain Charles L. Cashin currently serves as the chief of staff for the 17th Coast Guard District. Headquartered in Juneau, Alaska, the 17th District encompasses an area of nearly 4 million square miles of the Pacific and Arctic Oceans including the Bering Sea.

Captain Cashin is a native of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and served aboard seven cutters, commanding three of them. Most recently he commissioned Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, the third of eight planned National Security Cutters. The centerpiece of the Coast Guard’s fleet, the National Security Cutter is capable of extended, worldwide deployment in support of homeland security and defense missions.

He has experience with every Coast Guard mission including law enforcement, search and rescue, homeland security and defense operations. These efforts are highlighted by security operations protecting the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Terminal at Valdez, Alaska, following the attacks of September 11th; deployments to the Far East in support of United Nations’s conventions; and deployments to the Middle East, where he conducted counter-piracy, narcotics and terrorism operations.

Previously, Captain Cashin served as Vice President Joe Biden’s special advisor for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism. Prior to serving in the White House, Captain Cashin was director of the Coast Guard’s National Command Center in Washington.

Captain Cashin is a 1988 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he earned a bachelor of science in civil engineering. He also holds a master of public administration from Harvard University and a master of national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College.
