The history of Horace Mann School is one rich in tradition, scholarship and leadership. It is a history founded on the premise that learning is not to be measured by grades alone, but by the remarkable, compassionate and socially significant lives our students and alumni choose to lead while at Horace Mann School and beyond. That history is alive in all that we do at Horace Mann School, in the passion our students bring to their work in our labs, on our stages, in our art studios and recital halls, and on our athletic fields. That tradition becomes dynamic as it informs our School today, a School we proudly present to you through this website, and a School we invite you to interact with and get to know. Our School is a model of traditional educational excellence and sound values in a society in search of both. We are a community that cares deeply about its students within a structure of immense expectations. We not only pride ourselves on having a talented and imaginative faculty capable of producing citizens who think freely and respond to reason, we pride ourselves on attracting students who long to be pushed to the heights of their abilities, who want to mine their worth for all it's worth.

The Educational Alliance currently serves 50,000 New Yorkers annually via 39 programs, including preschools, camps, after school programs, senior centers, health & wellness programs, arts & culture classes, and addiction recovery programs. All programs feature intergenerational and cross-cultural activities -- bringing together people from different backgrounds and age groups, so they can learn from and with each other. Who We Are The Educational Alliance is a non-profit organization that changes lives. Founded in 1889 to help Jewish immigrants get settled in the U.S., today we serve a broad and diverse group of downtown New Yorkers -- of all religions, ethnicities, races and socio-economic backgrounds. We help break the cycle of poverty for low-income children and families through our preschool, after school programs and college prep programs. We renew the minds & spirits of the weary through our art school. We provide companionship and meaningful activities for our older adults. We ensure that New York's hungry and homeless Jews have a place to get a warm kosher meal and a connection to the Jewish community. We give hope and support to people in despair through our addiction recovery programs. We're also home to downtown's most dynamic community center, The 14th Street Y, which has received the attention of the New York Times and New York Magazine
