Arnie Rivera

Chief Operating Officer

As the district’s chief operating officer, Arnie oversees all operational functions within CPS to ensure that all provided resources and services are aligned with the Five-Year Vision for the district.

Throughout his career, Arnie has served CPS students, staff, and families in various positions, including as budget director, deputy chief of staff, chief of public policy, a Chicago Board of Education member, and most importantly, a first-grade teacher. Arnie also served on the teams that successfully negotiated several contracts with the Chicago Teachers Union.

Arnie’s current role is a natural extension of his previous responsibilities with the district, which included developing and maintaining the district’s operating budget, planning and executing the Full School Day Outreach Program, and expanding International Baccalaureate programming throughout CPS high schools.

Arnie’s previous roles also include senior strategic advisor for After School Matters and chief operating officer for the Chicago Public Education Fund. He also served as deputy chief of staff for education under previous Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel, where he coordinated the administration’s early childhood through community college education policy.

Arnie holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in education and social policy from Northwestern University.

Northwestern University is a private institution founded in 1851 to serve the Northwest Territory, an area that now includes the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and parts of Minnesota. In 1853 the founders purchased a 379-acre tract of land on the shore of Lake Michigan 12 miles north of Chicago. They established a campus and developed the land near it, naming the surrounding town Evanston in honor of one of the University's founders, John Evans. After completing its first building, its first building in 1855, Northwestern began classes that fall with two faculty members and 10 students. Northwestern has three campuses and a total of 12 Schools and Colleges (one of which is located in South Florida. Two campuses are located on Lake Michigan, a 240-acre campus in Evanston, the first suburb north of Chicago, and a 25-acre campus in Chicago. One campus is located in Doha, Qatar.
