Biography

Anthony Niedwiecki was appointed Dean of Golden Gate University School of Law in August 2017. Dean Niedwiecki brings a collaborative and innovative approach to solving problems, a passion for higher education and students, a dedication to experiential learning and student success, and a personal and open leadership style that has energized our university. His unique background makes him a vital and important part of Golden Gate University.

Dean Niedwiecki joined GGU from his previous position as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago. As Associate Dean at John Marshall, he managed a broad set of responsibilities, including oversight of operations and academic programs at the law school. Niedwiecki led a thorough restructuring of the law school; oversaw expansion of its distance education and clinical education programs; supported the expansion of academic support and bar preparation programs; and began developing a partnership between John Marshall and the Barack Obama Presidential Center, among other achievements. He began his career at John Marshall as Director of the Lawyering Skills Program, which was ranked number two by U.S. News & World Report while under his leadership. Prior to his tenure at John Marshall, Dean Niedwiecki was associate professor at Nova Southeastern University's Shepard Broad Law School and assistant professor at Temple University's Beasley School of Law.

Anthony graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit with a B.A. in math, then moved to North Carolina to work as a high school math teacher. While in Charlotte, he decided to enroll in law school and chose Tulane University in New Orleans. He earned his J.D. from Tulane Law School and his LLM in Legal Education from Temple University's Beasley School of Law.

The Dean's extensive scholarly research focuses on metacognition and the need to better train students to transfer their learning to new and novel situations, which has greatly influenced his teaching and leadership. He also is passionate about his scholarship on political and legal rhetoric, which has had a large influence on his community activism and public service.

Dean Niedwiecki was also elected City Commissioner and Vice Mayor of Oakland Park, Florida in 2009. He was inspired to run for office after seeing an elected official publicly demean different groups in South Florida, including the LGBTQ, African-American, and Caribbean-American communities. During the campaign, Anthony married his husband, Waymon Hudson, in San Francisco when it was briefly legal in 2008. During his term in office, the couple took in a foster child, who lived with them for several years before he was accepted into. The focus of his election and time in office was to help those less fortunate in his community, promote equality, find jobs for the unemployed, and deal with a serious homeless population.

Dean Niedwiecki's passion for the law and for civil rights stems from his life experiences, having seen firsthand how laws can both stifle progress for equality and also dramatically expand access to civil rights very quickly. His life has been and continues to be dedicated to improving the community and transforming lives, important values he has carried throughout his life.
