Biography

Andrew Lakis, a native of North Carolina, serves as the executive director of Teach For America—Eastern North Carolina. In this role, Andrew manages more than 30 Teach For America (TFA) staff members, 150 corps members and maintains a strong network of 900 TFA alumni working and living in the area.

After earning a bachelor’s degree from Duke University, Andrew joined Teach For America as a corps member in Washington, D.C. He taught for four years in D.C. and earned an M.A. in teaching elementary education from American University before returning home to work as an instructional coach in Durham Public Schools. Convinced his own educational experience in North Carolina prepared him for success in life, and passionate about bringing more great teachers to the area who inspire the next generation of leaders, Andrew joined Teach For America-Eastern North Carolina staff in 2010. He has served in multiple leadership roles including teacher leadership development, school partnership development, senior managing director of external affairs and interim executive director.

In the past two years, his team has developed almost 200 new teachers and launched a rural teacher training institute that now provides summer school to over 500 local students each summer. Under Lakis’ leadership, the region has collaborated closely with community members and education leaders to strengthen partnerships that have resulted in corps members and alumni working in schools across 13 districts. Additionally, over 40 Teach For America alums currently serve in school and district leadership roles in the area.

As a father of two young boys, the oldest attending first grade in Durham Public Schools, he understands the urgent need to provide a great education in ENC’s communities and is excited to work with corps members, teachers, school leaders, parents, and community members to expand opportunities for all kids in the state he loves.
