The turmoil surrounding Brexit is taking a toll on the United Kingdom's auto industry, as sales and production plunge and fears grow that one of the country's most important sectors is facing a grim future.

Total car production fell 9.1 per cent to 1.5 million units last year after dropping by 3.7 per cent in 2017, according to figures released on Wednesday by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
