Tru Kids not giving up on Toys 'R' Us, plans to roll out smaller stores this year

Toys 'R' Us plans to open a handful of U.S. stores in time for the holidays, down from the 600 stores that were closed on the heels of the retailer's bankruptcy.

The comeback comes courtesy of Tru Kids Brands, a licensing firm formed last year by investment firms Angelo Gordon and Solus Alternative Asset Management.

The Parsippany, New Jersey-based company owns both the Toys 'R' Us and Babies 'R' Us brands, as well as the rights to mascot Geoffrey the Giraffe.
