They fanned out across the country, looking for treasures to fill their museum. Some items were plucked from existing collections like fruit from an orchard. Others were heirlooms offered by families that had stowed them away in closets and attics.

Curators spent a decade assembling the selection for the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened last fall in Washington.
