Taxpayer money being used to fund railways has risen to a five-year high, despite public fury at high fares and poor service, new figures show.Net taxpayer subsidies going to pay for rail networks rose by 8 per cent to £3.8billion in 2017-18, the Office of Rail and Road regulator, said yesterday.
