Washington — Should the rights of states to make their own marriage laws trump the rights of gay people and their families to have marriage’s protections?

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday grilled attorneys for gay marriage advocates and states that don’t recognize gay marriages — including Ohio — on how the court should answer that question when it issues a June decision that could decide whether same-sex marriage should be legalized nationwide.
