Judge halves $1.36M jury award to ex-coroner Lorain County
A federal judge on Thursday halved a jury’s award to the former Lorain County coroner and General Health District health director, after the jury found he was wrongly fired and endured retaliation.
A jury in May originally awarded Paul Matus $1.36 million — $1 million of which was for his retaliation claim. U.S. District Judge Donald Nugent reduced the verdict because Ohio law caps damages at $250,000 for the retaliation, he wrote in an order. Matus will now receive $615,178.18.
