WARRANT OFFICER HARRY IRONS, who has died aged 94, was under-age when he joined the RAF but went on to complete more than 60 bombing operations as an air gunner.

He was only 16 when he tried to join the RAF in 1940 but was told to return when he turned 18. Undaunted, two months later he presented himself at another recruiting office, this time wearing a trilby in an attempt to look older, using his mother's maiden name of Galloway and claiming to be 17 and a half.
