FLIGHT LIEUTENANT ARCHIE MCINNES, who has died a few hours after celebrating his 100th birthday, was one of the last six surviving Battle of Britain veterans.

Archibald McInnes was born on July 31 1919. He joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve in 1938 when he received some training as a pilot. He was called up at the outbreak of the war and completed his training on August 30 1940; he was commissioned the next day.
