Chinese car sales go into reverse for first time in two decades as economy stalls

CAR sales in China - the world's biggest automotive market - have gone into reverse, suffering their first annual fall in two decades.

Sales of cars dropped 6pc to 22.7m vehicles last year, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), and there are fears the decline is likely to continue in 2019.

For years China has been the focus of attention for global carmakers that have invested in plants there with local partners to capture a slice of the burgeoning market.
