Butler Shows He Is No Mere Fill-In for Bulls

MIAMI -- Before the 2011 N.B.A. draft, Jimmy Butler's junior college coach, Mike Marquis, received a phone call from Matt Lloyd, who was part of the Chicago Bulls' scouting department. Lloyd, who now works for the Orlando Magic, had a highly specific question for Marquis.

''He asked me, 'When we get to the Eastern Conference finals, can Jimmy guard Dwyane Wade or LeBron James?' '' Marquis recalled. ''I said, 'I don't know if he can do it or not, but he'll try and he'll never quit.' ''

The Bulls used the 30th pick of the first round to select Butler, who had spent one season playing for Marquis at Tyler Junior College in Texas before leaving for Marquette. And while Monday's second-round Game 1 against the Heat in Miami was not a conference-final game, Butler acquitted himself well.
