Former West Australian premier Colin Barnett has refused to quit Parliament despite his new Liberal Party leader, Mike Nahan, arguing the elder statesman needed to go as part of efforts to rebuild after one of the worst political losses on record.

Dr Nahan, the former treasurer who championed the electorally poisonous electricity privatisation, was elected leader at the Liberals' first party-room meeting since its disastrous loss to Labor on March 11.
