WGN-Channel 9 adding more local news as appetite for it diminishes in Chicago

In a startling turn of events, Tribune Media-owned WGN-Channel 9 said today it will add an additional hour of local news programming starting April 4.

The new hour of news from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays will be fronted by veteran Channel 9 anchors Mark Suppelsa and Micah Materre and weather anchor Tom Skilling. the sports anchor will be Dan Roan. This is the same team that anchors Channel 9's hour-long local newscast at 9 p.m., which had been the station's flagship newscast for decades.
